What is NTSE?
NTSE or National Talent Search Examination is a national level exam conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for granting scholarships to the meritorious students studying in class 10th. NTSE is only held for 10th standard students and the exam is conducted in two different stages – Stage I and II.
The first stage exam is a state-level exam and is conducted by all the Indian states and UTs. On the other hand, NTSE stage II is conducted for those students who clear the first stage. As mentioned earlier, only those who qualify in NTSE stage 1 will be eligible to write the Stage II exam. This is the main criteria. Meanwhile, the objective of organizing NTSE is to award scholarships to potential candidates who are aspiring to pursue higher education in the field of Science or Social Studies.
With these scholarships, students will be able to continue their education in their desired stream. NTSE scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the overall performance of students in both the stages of the examination.

NTSE Exam Pattern (Part-1 & Part-2)
The examination is conducted in two phases, namely Phase 1 – at state level and Phase 2 – at National Level.
Questions are Single Answer Objective type. OMR Sheets are provided to the students to fill the ovals.
Each Phase consists of two papers:
Paper 1: MAT (Mental Ability): 120 Min & 100 Questions
Paper 2: SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test): 120 Min & 100 Questions – Mathematics ( 20 Questions) + Science ( 40 Questions) + Social Science (40 Questions)

NTSE is conducted in TWO Stages:
Stage 1 is conducted state wise & union territories wise.
Stage 2 is conducted by NCERT, only for the students who are selected in stage 1. It is only one test across the nation. No interview is conducted at any stage.
Eligibility Criteria for Stage-I:
- Only Indian students are eligible to appear in this level.
- The students studying in Class X are eligible for appearing in this test.
- Minimum 60% marks for General Category and 55% for SC, ST and PH category candidates, in their Class IX (last academic year).
- Candidate must be a student in a recognized school in the respective State or Union Territory.
Eligibility Criteria for Stage-II:
- Based on Stage I, students recommended by state, are eligible for the Stage-II to be held by NCERT at National level.
- All the students, who secure the minimum required marks at Stage-II, are eligible for the scholarship program.
- All the eligible students, who wish to appear in the scholarship programme, are required to register for the same.
- After the scrutiny of the applications, only eligible candidates are allowed to appear in the exam.
Selection is done on the basis of quota, which is state wise & Union Territories wise.
The State quota is calculated on the basis of student enrolment at the secondary level with a minimum of 10 for UTs and 25 for states.
NTSE awards about 2000 scholarships every year.
Yes, as per national norms - For ST and SC candidates - 15% and 7.5%, respectively. For physically challenged students - 3% Only those candidates who obtain minimum qualifying marks under these categories are eligible for scholarship.
Scholarships are granted under the following stages:
1. For Class XI to Class XII, a scholarship of ₹ 1250/- per month is provided.
2. For Undergraduates and Postgraduates, a scholarship of ₹ 2000/- per month is provided.
3. For Ph.D., the scholarship amount is fixed in accordance with the UGC norms.
The Stage 1 examination is scheduled normally on the first or second Sunday of November in all states/UTs, except in Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar Island, Meghalaya and Mizoram where it is held normally on second Saturday of November every year.
It is advisable to read NTSE information circular of current session. The days can be changed in special circumstances.
Every State/UT has its own rules with respect to charging the fee.
The State/UT will announce the medium of examination respectively.
There will be 2 parts in Stage 1 examination: -
1. Mental Ability Test (MAT).
2. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
In every state/UT, results are usually declared by January/ February.
No, the stage 1 marks are for mere qualification to the next stage.
